Initial plans call for placing famous East Coast lighthouses on the Arizona shoreline, West Coast lighthouses on the California shoreline and those from the Great Lakes around the island. The lights will help with navigation by night and serve as an attraction for boaters during the day. When a sufficient number of lighthouses have been placed around the lake, the club plans to publish and distribute a guidebook of the lighthouses. The guidebook will give a history of the original lighthouse and details about the replica including:
Our Plan:
Where Will They Be Built:
Why Build Lighthouses:
How Can You Help:
Actual locations will be selected with guidance from the United States Coast Guard and assistance from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, State Parks , Mohave County Sheriff Office and the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe, which controls the bulk of the California shoreline of Lake Havasu. Whenever possible, sponsors will be encouraged to choose locations which correspond with the site selections and club's plan of placing East Coast lights on Arizona shoreline and West Coast lights on California shoreline.
The lighthouses will primarily serve as a safety function on Lake Havasu, making it possible for boaters to enjoy night boating and fishing. The beacons to be used in these lighthouses were designed for United States Coast Guard use, so they will provide excellant lighting on our lake. The tourist attraction aspect of the lights will help to draw boaters out of congested areas on the lake and give them a wholesome, family activity to enjoy. The ever increasing interest in lighthouses around the world enhances the appeal of the project. Opportunities for new special events will occur and visitors who had no previous interest in a visit to the desert will have another reason to explore our area.
